The British Virgin Islands consists of approximately 60 islands and cays, the most populated of which are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Tortola is easily accessible from the USA, UK and Europe via Puerto Rico, Antigua or St Thomas in the nearby US Virgin Islands (just a short, scenic ferry ride away).

The British Virgins are now the largest bareboat charter centre in the world. For this reason they are often less attractive to the long-distance cruising sailors, who prefer the less crowded islands of the Caribbean.
The BVI uses the American buoyage system, so red buoys mark the starboard side upon approach from the sea.

Tropical climate, relatively low humidity, constant temperature, the weather in the BVI is quite enjoyable. In the low season, there are some hurricanes, although in recent years they have had little consequent damage beyond some flooding.
Nationals of Canada, EU, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, USA do not require a visa to enter and visit the British Virgin Islands. Other nationals require a visa.
Taxis can be expensive. Don’t bother to haggle – prices are fixed by law. Rides can be colourful – shared with other passengers or the driver may stop en route to run an errand. Either way, it’s a good chance to really get to know the island.
With much lower incidence of crime than many other Caribbean areas, wandering about alone, even at night, is not considered a high risk. However, you should use your good judgment. Despite the perception of the Caribbean being laid back in relation to drugs, possession of narcotics is a criminal offence and the penalties can be severe.

Be sure to take sufficient amount of cash if you travel to the smaller islands in the BVI. None has an ATM or a bank, though most resorts take credit cards.
