BOOK NOW

The British Virgin Islands consists of approximately 60 islands and cays, the most populated of which are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Horizon Yacht Charters’ base is located at Nanny Cay Marina in Tortola, three miles west of Road Town, the capital of the BVI. Tortola is easily accessible from the USA, UK and Europe via Puerto Rico, Antigua or St Thomas in the nearby US Virgin Islands (just a short, scenic ferry ride away).

BVI (British Virgin Islands) offers you a wonderful BVI sailing vacation on our immaculately maintained monohulls or catamarans. We also offer luxury crewed charters. If you have never experienced a BVI yacht charter before, you are in for a treat. On your BVI sailing vacation you will experience white sand beaches, gentle trade winds, crystal clear waters and friendly people wherever you go. If you have visited our island paradise before, then come and revive faded memories or discover new ones. It is truly a sailor’s haven.

Nanny Cay Resort and Marina offers every comfort before and after your charter. A shore-side pool, two restaurants, beach with snorkeling reef, boutiques and provisioning store plus reasonably-priced, comfortable accommodation at Nanny Cay Hotel are all within a few steps of your boat. A true destination for your BVI Sailing Vacation!

The British Virgin Islands are considered by many to be the perfect Caribbean sailing destination for first-time sailboat charterers, with calm seas, constant trade winds and line-of-sight navigation. Experienced sailors will also enjoy the wealth of different islands to visit, including the coral island of Anegada. There are hundreds of stunning anchorages and moorings in the BVI to explore and the moorings are all secure and well maintained. You might visit on the way. Yacht-moorings, for overnight stays during BVI yacht charters, are available in many locations and there are plenty of attractive beach bars and restaurants around the islands.

Reasons to visit

Fabulous beaches

The beaches on British Virgin Islands are precisely what you see in travel magazines. Crystal-clear, calm waters, towering palm trees dot white-sand…

Snorkeling

British Virgin Islands is ranked as one of the world’s top diving and snorkeling destinations because of the water’s clear visibility, abundant and diverse marine life, and breathtaking coral reefs.

Pirates

Pirates hid their treasure often on Norman Island, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island. In the early 18th century, 55 chests of silver coins stolen from a Spanish galleon were buried in the sand at Norman Island. Unfortunately, they’ve been found already :(

Cooper Island

An eco-friendly resort with luxury rooms, located 30 minutes by boat from Tortola – a hot spot for all types of seafarers. Must see.

Cuban cigars

You can get them now in Cuba, legally, but still you’ll have a feeling of buying contraband :) The best deal on cuban cigars is on the local supermarkets (around 10-12 dollars a piece).

Tortola

The largest of the islands, full of tropical beaches, a bustling city vibe, and mesmeriting views of the surrounding islands. If you want to experience a gorgeous beach without crowd, Tortola is the place for you. Make sure you don’t miss Cane Garden Bay, a small, lovely village with a beautiful beach.

Need to know

Climate

Tropical climate, relatively low humidity, constant temperature, the weather in the BVI is quite enjoyable. In the low season, there are some hurricanes, although in recent years they have had little consequent damage beyond some flooding.

Visas

Nationals of Canada, EU, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, USA do not require a visa to enter and visit the British Virgin Islands. Other nationals require a visa.

Taxi

Taxis can be expensive. Don’t bother to haggle – prices are fixed by law. Rides can be colourful – shared with other passengers or the driver may stop en route to run an errand. Either way, it’s a good chance to really get to know the island.

Stay Safe

With much lower incidence of crime than many other Caribbean areas, wandering about alone, even at night, is not considered a high risk. However, you should use your good judgment. Despite the perception of the Caribbean being laid back in relation to drugs, possession of narcotics is a criminal offence and the penalties can be severe.

Time Zone / Currency

Atlantic Time Zone (UTC-04:00). The US dollar is the legal currency within the British Virgin Islands.

Banks and ATMS

Be sure to take sufficient amount of cash if you travel to the smaller islands in the BVI. None has an ATM or a bank, though most resorts take credit cards.
